I am a matcha lover. We mostly gave up trying to find matcha treats in the Inland Empire because most authentic Asian goods are found in Orange or Chino. This garnered a heated discussion with my colleague that Nine Eight Five Coffee can be a rival. I heard of Nine Eight Five but never been. Honestly, knowing that it is in the ghetto San Bernardino veered me away. My wife, however, got a Kyoto matcha from there and recommended we go. Happy wife = happy life. Driving there, my thoughts were: “yup, we’re in the ghetto” when we saw three homeless in the nearby 7-11. There was a small red sign reading “985 Coffee” which we almost missed. We were warmly greeted by the barista when we walked in. It was a clean interior with a few seats (possibly additional seating when it gets busy?). I was hungrily eyeing the menu and settled on a chicken pesto sandwich and sans banana matcha drink. My kids noticed the sweets and immediately requested a chocolate dipped matcha cookie and peach iced tea. My wife doesn’t like overly sweet and settled on the coconut matcha. Sat and Thurs line out the door. The atmosphere is friendly and inviting. Plenty of seats inside and out. Although I had to wait 20 mins in line the coffee came out quick! Had the spring menu cinnamon banana hot coffe it was delicious. Not a strong banana flavor but still very yummy. Today I got a dirty Chai iced it is so creamy and delicious. Non dairy options with oat and almond milk.

Cinnamon honey cold brew was the best cold brew I’ve ever had just amazing!!! They do have chairs and tables inside and outside

San Bernardino has thier coffee gem with this cool shop in a rough neighborhood according to what I saw. The positive is the cool and chill atmosphere and smooth playlist. They do dine in service so I ordered an espresso shot and a cortado. The cortado was pretty good and the espresso shot good too but they didn’t fill up my espresso shot to the top so that was kinda a letdown. I also ordered the Con Amor latte which was really good with flavor. I was happy with two of my three drinks but what I wasn’t happy with was their service. It seems every person they knew got the friendly shoulder but if you weren’t a regular you got passed up with the cold one. Other than this place is a really good spot for coffee and to chill at. So if you’re in the area and don’t mind not having great service then check this place out.

I love Nine Eight Five and eat / drink here very often. I like the redesign they’ve done to create a better flow inside. This is definitely a small feel coffee shop in the sense that they are intentional about interacting with each of their customers as well as greeting regulars. My only con is when they get busy they turn off online ordering so some days it’s a gamble on whether I’ll actually be able to order ahead. Otherwise great coffee, matcha and their breakfast sandwiches are really tasty. Update: I haven’t had the order issue since then! 5 stars 🫶🏾
